When a tooth can't be saved, we'll remove it as comfortably and carefully as possible.
There are a handful of reasons a tooth might have to come out — deep decay, infection, gum disease that's taken hold, a fracture, or simply not enough room in the mouth. We'll always weigh up whether the tooth can realistically be saved before suggesting extraction, and if removal genuinely is the better path, we keep things as comfortable as we can with a good local anaesthetic and up-to-date technique. Around 95% of the extractions we do are routine, no-fuss procedures. Now and again a tooth is too broken down, or has fractured below the gum line, or is otherwise awkward to get out safely, and in those cases a surgical extraction is the safer route — something we'll always flag and explain before we start.

Your tooth is removed gently under local anaesthetic. Patients aged 18 and over who feel especially anxious can also ask about IV conscious sedation, where suitable.

No — local anaesthetic fully numbs the tooth before we start. You might feel some pressure during the procedure, but pain shouldn't be part of it.

Certainly — an implant, bridge or denture might all be suitable replacements depending on where the tooth was. We'll discuss these once your mouth has had time to heal.
