If anxiety has kept you away from the dentist, you're far from alone. Our IV conscious sedation service helps adults feel deeply relaxed throughout treatment, so we can carry out the dental care you need in a calm, unhurried environment.
Nervousness about the dentist is far more common than people think, and for some it's severe enough to put treatment off for years. With IV conscious sedation, you stay awake but feel wonderfully calm throughout the whole appointment. It suits nervous patients particularly well, along with anyone with a pronounced gag reflex or those facing a longer or more involved procedure, and many people find they recall very little of it afterwards. Sedation also has a practical benefit: because you're relaxed and comfortable, we're frequently able to fit in far more work than usual in a single sitting, cutting down on the number of separate visits you need. Please note: IV conscious sedation is only offered to patients aged 18 and over.
We'll go through your medical history and any worries you have, then work out together whether IV conscious sedation is the right fit for you.
We map out your treatment in detail beforehand so your sedation appointment is used as efficiently as possible, frequently combining several procedures into one visit.
A fine cannula goes into a vein in your hand or arm, through which the sedative is given gradually. This leaves you feeling calm and drowsy, yet still conscious and able to follow instructions.
Once treatment is finished, you'll spend some time resting in our recovery area before we discharge you into the care of the adult who came with you. Someone will need to see you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

Nobody likes a surprise bill, us included — every plan is set out in writing up front, so there's nothing unexpected waiting for you at reception.
Please note that sedation fees are billed separately from your dental treatment costs, and this service is limited to patients aged 18 and above.

No. IV conscious sedation doesn't put you to sleep. You'll remain conscious and able to respond to your dentist, but you'll feel deeply relaxed throughout your treatment.
Recall of the appointment tends to be hazy for most patients afterwards. Reactions vary from person to person, but it's typical for the whole thing to feel as though it flew by.
No. You'll need a responsible adult to accompany you home, and you shouldn't drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or sign important documents until the following day.
A surprising amount. Being relaxed and settled means we can often pack far more into a single sedation appointment than would usually take several ordinary visits to achieve.
Yes — it's a well-established technique with a long track record of safe use in dentistry, provided it's delivered by suitably trained clinicians. We monitor you continuously throughout to keep you safe and comfortable.
No, this isn't something we can offer children. IV conscious sedation is reserved for patients who are 18 or older.
