YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENTYour first visit
First appointments follow the same format for every new patient — a full examination, X-rays where clinically needed, and a plain-English rundown of anything that needs attention along with the cost, before you agree to anything.
We check the teeth, obviously, but also the gums, the bite and the soft tissues, because that's where problems tend to start quietly. If we spot something, you'll see it on screen rather than just hearing about it.
You leave with a written plan. If there's nothing to do, we'll tell you that too and book your next check-up — we don't invent treatment to fill a plan. If there is work needed, it's laid out in order of priority with fixed prices, so you can decide what to do now and what can reasonably wait.
Nothing is booked in on the day under pressure. Take the plan home, talk it over, ring us or message on WhatsApp with questions. Most Abertridwr patients book their treatment a week or two later once they've had a proper think.
LOCAL TO YOUFor terraced valley streets and young families
Abertridwr's rows of valley terraces are home to a real mix of long-standing residents and younger families who've moved up the valley for more space at a lower price than Caerphilly itself. We see plenty of both — grandparents booking implant consultations and their grandchildren coming in for their first check-up on the same afternoon.
That family pattern shapes how we book. Where we can, we'll put two or three members of the same household in consecutive slots so one car journey down the valley covers everybody. It sounds like a small thing; for a family running one car it's the difference between keeping up with check-ups and quietly letting them slide.
The village's mining history shows up in the dentistry too. A generation of Aber Valley patients grew up with dental care that was, frankly, more about extraction than preservation, and plenty of people carry the results of that — missing back teeth, older bridgework, dentures that were fitted decades ago and have never been reviewed. A lot of what we do here is quietly bringing that up to date, at whatever pace suits the patient.
And because we're based in Llanbradach rather than a city centre, we're not a practice you visit once and never see again. We know which families are related to which, who's nervous, who prefers a morning slot. That continuity is the honest advantage of a small valley practice.
NHS WAITS AND GOING PRIVATEWhat going private actually means, in plain terms.
NHS dental access across the Caerphilly borough has been difficult for years, and the Aber Valley feels it more than most because there's nothing on the doorstep to fall back on. Plenty of Abertridwr residents have been on a list somewhere, been de-registered after missing a recall, or simply never managed to get on one in the first place.
We're a private practice, which means there's no list to join and no wait to be seen. You ring or book online, you get an appointment, and you're seen. That's the whole difference in practical terms.
On cost, we'd rather be blunt than vague. Every treatment has a price, that price is confirmed in writing after your examination, and it doesn't change partway through. Plans over £500 can be spread with 0% finance subject to status, which is how most people handle implant or Invisalign treatment rather than paying in one go.
Nobody at Astro Dental is on a commission to sell you treatment. If a filling will do the job, we'll do the filling.
NERVOUS PATIENTSIf it's been years, you're in good company.
A large share of new Abertridwr patients tell us at the door that they haven't seen a dentist in a long time and are dreading being judged for it. It doesn't happen here. We start where you are.
For very anxious patients, the first appointment can be nothing more than a conversation and a look — no instruments, no treatment, no commitment. Once you're comfortable, we go a step further. Some patients take three or four visits to get to the point where treatment feels manageable, and that's a perfectly reasonable way to do it.
Practical things help more than reassurance does: an agreed hand signal to stop, breaks whenever you want them, numbing gel before any injection, and being told what's happening before it happens rather than afterwards. For treatment that would otherwise be too much, IV sedation is available for suitable adult patients aged 18 and over.
If it would help to see the surgery before booking anything, ring us and come in for a look. Several people have.
CHILDREN AND FAMILIESFirst check-ups for Aber Valley children.
We see children from Abertridwr from their very first check-up onwards, and the early visits are deliberately low-key: sit in the chair, have a count of the teeth, get a sticker, go home. Nothing else needs to happen at age three.
The aim is that dental appointments never become a thing to be frightened of, which mostly means not rushing and not springing surprises. If a child isn't ready to open their mouth on the first visit, we don't force it — they'll be ready next time.
As children get older the conversation shifts to the things that actually cause problems in valley households: fizzy drinks and squash, sports mouthguards for the rugby, and whether crowding is going to need attention later. We'll tell you honestly if we think orthodontic treatment is likely, and roughly when.
Family bookings on the same afternoon are usually possible — just say when you ring, and we'll line the slots up.
EMERGENCIESToothache when you're up the valley.
Being at the top end of the Aber Valley makes dental pain worse than it needs to be, because your options feel far away. Ours is nine minutes down the road.
Ring first thing if you're in pain and we'll do everything we can to see you the same day. Where possible we'll get you comfortable at that first appointment — draining an abscess, dressing a tooth, sorting a lost filling or a broken front tooth — and then plan the definitive work once the pain has settled.
You don't need to be a registered patient to be seen in an emergency. Plenty of our long-term Abertridwr patients first came to us with an abscess on a Friday afternoon and simply stayed.
If you're not sure whether it counts as an emergency, message us on WhatsApp and describe it. Swelling, throbbing pain that keeps you awake, or a knocked-out tooth all mean ring now rather than wait.
