YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENTYour first visit
Because most Ystrad Mynach patients have made a deliberate choice to travel to us, we try to make the first visit count — a thorough examination, X-rays where needed, and a clear treatment plan with costs set out before you commit to anything, so the trip down the valley isn't wasted.
We'll also use that first appointment to understand why you're travelling past your nearer options in the first place — whether it's a specific treatment, availability, or simply wanting a different experience — so the plan we put together actually addresses what brought you here, rather than assuming it's the same as every other new patient we see.
LOCAL TO YOUFor valley commuters and college families
Ystrad Mynach is a hub in its own right, with the college and the leisure centre drawing people in from across the valley, and a busy commuter flow south into Cardiff via the A469 and the railway. We deliberately keep evening and Saturday slots open so patients who work down in Cardiff can fit an appointment around the commute rather than around it.
The town's role as a valley crossroads — sitting between the Rhymney and Sirhowy valleys, with routes branching off towards Nelson, Hengoed and Bargoed — means a lot of our Ystrad Mynach patients are already used to travelling for things that aren't available on their own doorstep, whether that's a hospital appointment, a college course or specialist shopping. Coming a little further for dental treatment they're happy with fits that same pattern, and once people make the trip once and see how it goes, most are happy to keep making it.
GOING PRIVATESkipping the NHS wait for specific treatment
A lot of the enquiries we get from Ystrad Mynach are from patients who've already tried the NHS route locally and been quoted a wait of many months for anything beyond a routine check-up, or been told certain treatments — implants, for instance — simply aren't offered on the NHS at all. As a private practice with no NHS list to work through, we can usually offer an initial consultation within days. That doesn't make us the right choice for every budget, and we're always upfront about cost before committing to anything, but for someone who's already waited once and doesn't want to wait again, the extra ten minutes down the valley is often the smaller inconvenience.
NERVOUS PATIENTSNervous about treatment after a bad experience?
We hear from a number of Ystrad Mynach patients who've had a difficult experience elsewhere — a rushed appointment, a treatment that didn't go as expected, or simply feeling like a number on a busy NHS list. Coming to a practice a little further from home can actually help here, because there's no history to walk back into and no waiting room full of familiar faces if you'd rather keep things private. We'll go at your pace, explain what we're doing before we do it, and won't push you into agreeing to treatment during the first conversation.
FOR FAMILIESInvisalign and cosmetic work for Ystrad Mynach parents
A recurring pattern we see from Ystrad Mynach is parents whose children have been through school-age orthodontics finally getting round to sorting their own teeth once the school run calms down. Invisalign consultations are a common starting point, often booked for a lunchtime or early-evening slot around work at the hospital, the college, or further down the valley in Caerphilly. We're happy to talk through realistic timelines and cost before committing to anything, and a number of our current Invisalign cases are Ystrad Mynach patients who first came in simply to ask questions.
EMERGENCIESGetting seen quickly in a dental emergency
If you're in pain, have a broken tooth, or a crown has come loose, we'll always try to fit you in the same day regardless of where in the valley you're travelling from, including Ystrad Mynach. Call as early in the day as possible — mornings give us the best chance of finding a same-day slot — and if you're driving down the A469, avoid the school-run windows either side of 8.30am and 3.15pm where you can, since that's when the road through Hengoed and towards Lewis School Pengam gets busiest.
COSTSCosts and paying for treatment
We agree every cost with you before treatment begins, and for more significant work — implants, a full course of Invisalign, or several crowns — we can talk through finance options that spread payments over time. Given the drive involved, we know Ystrad Mynach patients are weighing up the cost of travel as well as the treatment itself, so we try to bundle appointments sensibly where we can, timing check-ups, hygiene visits and any necessary follow-ups to minimise the number of separate trips down the valley you need to make.
