Overview — 001

Treat gum disease early before it leads to permanent damage.

Gum disease is a remarkably common condition, and it often goes unnoticed until it's fairly well established. Caught early, as gingivitis, it usually responds well to professional treatment plus decent home care. Left to progress into periodontitis, it needs more specialist periodontal treatment aimed at clearing harmful bacteria from below the gum line and stabilising things from there. Where a routine hygiene visit is largely preventative, gum disease treatment is about actively managing an infection under the gums and protecting the bone that holds your teeth in place. The goal throughout is simple: halt the disease, get your gums back to a healthier state, and help you hang onto your natural teeth for as long as possible.

The things people actually ask.

  • Watch for bleeding when brushing, swollen or tender gums, ongoing bad breath, receding gums, and, in more advanced cases, teeth that feel loose. Notice any of these and it's worth booking a check-up promptly.

  • A routine hygiene visit is preventative, clearing plaque and tartar from above the gum line. Gum disease treatment goes further, tackling infection beneath the gums to stabilise periodontitis.

  • Gingivitis, the early stage, can usually be reversed with treatment and good home care. Periodontitis, the more advanced stage, can't be cured outright but can normally be managed and kept stable.

  • Most patients find treatment perfectly tolerable. Where deeper cleaning beneath the gums is needed, local anaesthetic keeps things comfortable throughout.

  • Not necessarily — caught early and managed properly, most patients keep their natural teeth for years to come. Early treatment is what makes the real difference long-term.

  • Regular check-ups, ongoing maintenance appointments, and thorough brushing and cleaning between teeth are the best defence against gum disease returning.
